[ARCHIVED] Part of Crystal Springs Trail CLOSED on Saturday

Untitled design

Crystal Springs Trail (specifically the portion behind Thornton Oaks) will be CLOSED temporarily on Saturday from 7am-7pm while consultants perform tree-related work, such as “chop and drops”.

Chop and drops refer to stream restoration that deliberately places trees and woody debris into streams to enhance fish habitat and improve overall stream health. This method mimics natural processes where trees fall into the water, creating pools, riffles, and undercut banks, while also trapping sediment and reducing erosion. By restoring these natural features, chop and drop can improve water quality, increase biodiversity, and enhance the stream's ability to handle flood events.

This work is being performed in 3 different sections of Mare Brook that run through three different properties. (One segment through Navy property, another two through Town-owned property as well as Thornton Oaks property. The portion that runs through Thornton Oaks/Town property is the section that will be closed to the public on Saturday.)

The attached photo is from Mare Brook that runs through Navy property shows similar results we aim to recreate in support of increasing habitat complexity and suitability for local brook trout populations.
