Household Hazardous Waste

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers some leftover household products that can catch fire, react, or explode under certain circumstances, or that are corrosive or toxic as household hazardous waste (HHW). Products such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides can contain hazardous ingredients and require special care when you dispose of them. Improper disposal of HHW includes pouring them down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or putting them with your normal household trash.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

Each year we host two household hazardous waste collection days for residents to dispose of these materials safely and conveniently.

If you are unable to wait until our locally scheduled drop-off events, you can dispose of your hazardous waste at the Environmental Depot in Lewiston or Riverside Recycling in Portland. Both locations charge a fee and have limited operating hours, so please go to their website or call for more information.
