Marriage Licenses

  1. General Information

Residents of the State of Maine must file their marriage intentions with the municipal clerk in the municipality where one of them resides. For example, if both parties live in Brunswick, then they must file their marriage intentions in Brunswick. If one lives in Topsham and the other lives in Brunswick, they have a choice on which municipality they would like to file in. Once the intentions are filed and the license is issued, the parties are free to marry anywhere within the State of Maine. The license is valid for a period of 90 days from the date the intentions are filed.

If the parties intent to change their name upon marriage, the parties will be required to provide their proposed new name(s) when filing intentions. Otherwise, name changes will need to be completed after the marriage through probate court and additional fees will apply.

  1. Out-of-Sate Residents

Out-of-State Residents wishing to marry in Maine may file their intentions to marry in any Maine municipality’s Office of the Clerk. Once the intentions are filed and the license is issued, the parties are free to marry anywhere within the State of Maine. The license is valid for a period of 90 days from the date the intentions are filed.

The Town of Brunswick Clerk’s Office does not officiate marriages. Once you receive your license, you must find a licensed/qualified officiant to finalize the ceremony. If you require an officiant, we have a list of local officiants and would be happy to provide you with their contact information. You may also search for an officiant on the State of Maine website.
